Bachelet-Monnot Red Burgundy Offer
“Alexandre and Marc Bachelet have been on fire over recent vintages… My budget would be invested in the outstanding Maranges premier crus such as Fussière and Clos de la Boutière, which I strongly suspect will represent some of the best values in the entire Côte d’Or… and if I were a millionaire, I would still buy them.” – Neil Martin, Vinous
As much as I love Burgundy, I have yet to offer much of it to the membership. The basic problem being that Burgundy and bargain simply don’t appear in the same sentence—until now. These are, and I’m not kidding, some of the best deals I’ve come across in Burgundy.
Back in the early aughts, I was a Burgundy and Bordeaux broker on the East Coast. I cut my teeth on Bordeaux futures, the very French concept of selling wine that hasn’t even been bottled yet at, wait for it, $800 a bottle first tranche. I love the stuff, but wow, not a bargain.
Once in a blue moon, I come across something that truly makes me pause. I went down to San Francisco for a portfolio tasting, and upon coming across these Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Crus, both David Hinkle (the French specialist for Skurnik Wines) and I were in total agreement: these wines are stellar and showing beautifully right now. I grabbed everything I could, and quantities are limited.
These are wines you’ll want in your collection, and as they mature, you’ll wish you had more.
Bachelet-Monnot, Maranges 1er Cru, La Fussière 2023 ($65)
“The 2023 Maranges La Fussière 1er Cru Rouge is blended with 30% whole bunch. It has an understated bouquet of light earthy red fruit with sous-bois and mineral notes. It opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins, very poised, airy, and transparent, yet with real weight and presence on the finish. Bon vin!” – Neil Martin, Vinous
Bachelet-Monnot, Maranges 1er Cru, Clos de la Boutière 2023 ($65)
This is the fuller of the two, maybe the pony to bet on…
“The 2023 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru comes from the estate’s oldest vines, over 90 years old. It has a tightly wound yet finely delineated bouquet with blackberry, wild mint, and a touch of potpourri. The medium-bodied palate features pliant tannins that lend a silky texture through to the fleshy finish. Lightly spiced with impressive length, this is another extremely well-crafted Maranges from Bachelet-Monnot.” – Neil Martin, Vinous
Mayacama Wine Trip to Burgundy
If Burgundy is calling your name, we’ll be taking it one step further this summer. From June 8th through June 12th, we’ll be hosting a curated Mayacama trip to Burgundy with just four seats available. We’ll be meeting with Charles Curtis, MW and Burgundy correspondent for Decanter Magazine, with visits beginning in Chablis before settling into Beaune for five nights. From there, we’ll explore Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Vosne-Romanée, and Gevrey-Chambertin.
If you’re interested in joining, reach out to me directly at [email protected] for more info—this will fill quickly.
Thank you, as always, for supporting the Mayacama wine program. We’re excited to share these wines with our Members, and I’m always happy to talk through the selections or help with your order. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
Cheers!
