Failla Pinot Vertical

Of the handful of Vintners growing grapes and making wine on the West Sonoma Coast, Ehren Jordan is probably the regions most celebrated. Through decades of combined experience in cellars and vineyards from the Rhône Valley to Paso Robles, Sonoma County to the Willamette Valley, Jordan has acquired a true mastery of his craft.

Vintage after vintage, the Failla wines have proven to provide both immediate satisfaction as well as the ability to age gracefully if given the opportunity. Jordan’s Estate Pinot Noir comes from his Estate Vineyard in the Fort-Ross Seaview AVA on the West Sonoma Coast.

Situated just four miles from the Pacific Ocean at an elevation of 1400 ft., the site (90 acres total with 8 acres under vine) was planted in 1998 and is organically dry farmed. While fruit from this vineyard contributes to several different Failla bottlings, it’s a small block of Pommard clone planted mid-slope that is the makeup of their Estate Pinot Noir.

As Jordan utilizes mostly Old-World technique both in the vineyard and the winery, his decision to isolate this specific Pommard block for his Estate Pinot Noir is in line with classic vigneron practice. Most of the Grand Crus in Burgundy are sited on mid-slope parcels, valued for their excellent drainage and ideal aspect/exposure to sun.

In the winery, the fruit undergoes all native yeast for fermentation with 25% of the batch utilizing the whole cluster. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels (25% new). 300 cases are produced each year.

Today’s Mayacama Wine Offer celebrates Failla’s special Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir bottling with exclusive access to a library vertical of the wine (’16, ’17, ’18). This is one of those rare opportunities to taste a wine as it makes its way through time, the only differentiating factor being the vintage.

This is a limited offering and so if you are interested in acquiring this vertical for your cellar, I recommend stocking up sooner rather than later, as it will most likely sell out.

As always, feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for your continued support.

Cheers!
