This summer, Mayacama began working with a new beekeeper from Sebastopol to expand upon our apiary, with the goal of producing a higher quality and quantity of honey. If you haven't yet seen the hives, next time you're on the course, take a look past the pond on the 16th green.
Clayton Cook of Straightline Bee Company came on board to help us install a new queen bee in one of the hives that had not been producing as well as the other hives, and he has been maintaining the colony for us on a regular basis.
"I really enjoy coming up to Mayacama to care for the apiary here. It's a beautiful spot and all the staff I've been introduced to so far have been very welcoming and interested in what we're trying to accomplish with the hives. I love that the products from the hives here go straight into the kitchen to be used by Chef Scott and his crew to enhance the dining experience of those who eat in the Club. It's a natural fit and part of what makes Sonoma County such a special place to live, work, and play. I'm looking forward to being part of what makes the Club special for those who visit it as well as those who work here," says Clayton.
The ability to produce our own honey on property allows Executive Chef Scott Pikey the opportunity to create amazing dishes with flavors unique to Mayacama.
"We're very excited to have Clayton on board to help take the program to the next level," says Executive Chef Scott Pikey.
We are thrilled to share that all the hard work has paid off and Clayton and Scott have harvested some high-quality honey and honeycomb from the hives this year, which are utilized in various dishes on the current Autumn menu.
The marvel of nature and these little insects taking pollen from native plants and turning it into liquid gold with a bit of help from us is indeed a rewarding experience. We hope you as Members feel the same way!
MORE ABOUT CLAYTON
Q: Can you tell us a little more about Straightline Bee Co?
A: "I have a business called Straightline Bee Co. I maintain hives, raise queens, sell bees, honey, and hive products. I also do structural removals from buildings and other similar structures when bees take up residence in them, which is how I was first introduced to Mayacama. I removed a colony from the maintenance building this spring that had been in the peak of the eave for a few years."
Q: How did you get started in beekeeping?
A: "I learned about bees from my grandfather when I was young, but I didn't take it up myself until about 10 years ago."
Q: How many different colonies do you look after?
A: "I have about 45 or 50 of my own colonies that are distributed between 5 different apiaries around Sonoma County, all the way from west of Petaluma, to West County and in the city limits of Santa Rosa. I can't get enough of working with bees and try to learn new skills each year as well as learn from my past experiences with the bees."
