Art Comes to Life at Mayacama This Winter

As you spend time around the Club this winter, you may notice a new creative presence becoming part of the daily rhythm at Mayacama. We are delighted to share that, for the first time, the Club is hosting an Artist in Residence—an experience designed to invite curiosity, conversation, and a deeper connection to the place we all call home.

Our inaugural Artist in Residence is Ezra Johnson, a contemporary painter based between Tampa, New York, and London. Born in Wenatchee, Washington, Ezra received his MFA from Hunter College in 2006 and has since exhibited his work at institutions including the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Site Santa Fe, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. His practice begins with the everyday, using familiar surroundings as starting points for graphic, painterly explorations of shape, color, and light. Deeply reverential of historical painting traditions, Ezra approaches classic subjects with a contemporary lens—finding inspiration in still lifes, interiors, and atmospheric environments that capture a strong sense of place.

We invite you to explore a selection of Ezra’s work here:

During his month-long stay, Ezra will be living and working on property, drawing inspiration from the landscape, architecture, and moments of daily life at Mayacama. The pool area will serve as his working studio, and Members are warmly invited to stop by, observe his process, and engage with his work as it evolves. You may also see Ezra throughout the Club during his residency, quietly observing and engaging with the spaces and moments that make Mayacama unique.

This residency is intended to be both approachable and immersive. Members are welcome to introduce themselves, spend time getting to know Ezra and his work, or simply enjoy seeing creativity unfold in real time. For those interested, Ezra will also be open to discussing potential commissions inspired by personal moments, meaningful places, or scenes from life at Mayacama, offering a rare opportunity to collaborate directly with an artist during his time here.

Ezra will also be present at our February First Friday Pour, providing an easy and informal opportunity to meet him, view his work, and begin conversations in a relaxed, social setting alongside fellow Members.

To further celebrate his residency, we look forward to hosting a special dinner with Ezra on Saturday, February 7. The evening will offer Members the chance to connect with him in a more intimate setting, hear about his artistic approach and influences, and enjoy thoughtful conversation over a shared meal. Additional details will be shared soon.

We hope you enjoy this new and meaningful addition to the Club experience, and we look forward to welcoming you into this creative chapter at Mayacama.
