The Philosophy

Located just minutes from downtown Healdsburg, Armida Winery may be best known for its expressive, bold Zinfandels with unique names. In the past, the winery has been voted both Best Zinfandel and Best Tasting Room by NorthBay biz readers.

“We make eight different Zinfandels, each between 200 and 1,800 cases,” explains co-owner Bruce Cousins. “Our largest single vineyard production is from Maple Vineyards. We also produce Zinfandel from our estate vineyard (Il Campo), Italo’s Vineyard, Parmelee-Hill Vineyard and Tina’s Block, originally planted in 1910. We distribute Maple Vineyards Zinfandel as well as our super-fun PoiZin,” the wine to die for”, to restaurants and retail stores. Our other single vineyard wines are available only at our tasting room or through our wine club.”

Originally founded in 1988 by Bob Frugoli, Armida Winery has been owned and operated by Bruce and his brother, Steve, since 1994. Armida Winery supports eight full-time employees, including winemaker Brandon Lapides.

“We’ve been fortunate to be producing Zinfandel from Maple Vineyards for 18 years,” explains Bruce. “When I informed Tina Maple of this wonderful award, she cheered, ‘Way to go team, Armida is amazing!’”

The winery’s name is derived from Mediterranean roots and dramatic stories. “The name Armida is found in Mediterranean cultures, primarily Italian and Spanish,” Bruce explains. “Evidence strongly suggests the name originates from Torquato Tasso’s romantic epic poem, Gerusalemme Liberata, which is the story of Armida, a Saracen sorceress and warrior; and Rinaldo, a soldier of the first Crusade.”

Images of epic battles and crusades also influence some of the wine’s packaging. Each bottle of the Reserve PoiZin comes in an etched bottle topped with thick red wax dripping down its sides like an ancient candle. To emphasize the effect, each bottle comes in a wooden box shaped like a coffin.

In addition to numerous Zinfandels, Armida also makes other popular varietals. “If you like our Zins, you’re sure to enjoy some of our other reds, particularly our Stuhlmuller Cabernet Sauvignon and Gap’s Crown Pinot Noir,” says Bruce. “And you may also be interested in our whites, including our Antidote Chardonnay.”

Asked what he’d say to someone who hasn’t yet visited Armida’s award-winning tasting room, Bruce seemed truly shocked by the question. “Wow, I thought everyone’s been here at least once!” he says, adding, “Where have you been? Come on over and we promise you’ll have a great time!”

Beyond making popular wines, Armida Winery is committed to supporting the community. “We donate a bottle of PoiZin and our Antidote to almost every local charity event,” he explains. “Beyond that, for years Armida has been a contributor to the Healdsburg Museum, the local animal shelter, the Council on Aging and we were the official wine sponsor for this year’s annual food pantry fundraiser.”

To the NorthBay biz readers who voted for them, Bruce says thanks. “Thank you for thinking about us. The entire Armida team gives its all, and it’s gratifying to know we’re appreciated!”

Bruce would love to share some of his award winning Zinfandels in honor of this fabulous tribute at some very special pricing:

The Wines

2013 Maple Vineyard
The Maple Vineyard sits up on a bench above the east side of Dry Creek Valley, and is farmed utilizing old world techniques by Tom and Tina Maple. These old Zinfandel vines (85+ years) are dry farmed resulting in wines of great depth and concentration. The beautiful Zinfandel clusters are sorted a minimum of three times to ensure that only the highest quality fruit is being used for this unique single-vineyard wine. Half of the wine was fermented in an open-top tank to soften the tannin structure. Only free-run wine was gently transferred to French and American oak barrels to age for 16 months. The nearly perfect 2013 vintage resulted in a beautiful marriage of the pomegranate acidity with the classic Dry Creek Valley dark plum flavors and aromas. Enjoy the wine accompanied with tangy citrus glazed baby back ribs for a classic Sonoma County pairing.

2014 Maple Vineyard, Tina’s Block
Tina's Block in the Maple Vineyard sits up on a bench above Dry Creek Valley on the East side. The vines are very old (1910) in a vineyard mix of zinfandel (80+%), petite sirah, carignane, mission, black malvasia (a.k.a cincault), grenache, and some still-unidentified-black grapes. Originally Tom and Tina Maple slated this vineyard block for removal because of its mix and decrepitude. But gradually as they came to know and appreciate the different varieties in this they began in earnest to retrain and rehabilitate the viable old vines and replace the dead vines with healthy young Zin plants. This old, head pruned and dry farmed vineyard block, with its unique combination of varietals creates a powerful and concentrated Zinfandel. This wine is classic Tina's Block with tons of lush fruit, blueberries, blackberries, and black cherries. Sweet vanilla oak, cola, and cinnamon finish out this well balanced wine. A beauty and a block buster - not for the faint of heart or palate!

2013 Il Campo, Field Blend
This premium single-vineyard estate field blend comes from our home ranch in the western hills of Healdsburg. We pick our 5-acres of Zinfandel and 1-acre of Petite Sirah together and co-ferment them together. The grapes were picked at the crack of dawn, then destemmed and cold soaked before fermentation for 5 days. Only free run wine was gently transferred to a mix of French and American Oak barrels for 16 months of aging. Aromas of blackberries and baklava fill the room when the bottle is opened. The entry reminds of fresh bing cherries and pomegranates, while the rich, silky tannins support the finish of strawberries and cocoa.

2013 Reserve Poizin (No Coffin)
This wine is the best of the best Zin that we have to offer. This year the best and most delicious 9-barrels of Zinfandel in our cellar were chosen and blended to create this otherworldly nectar. The nose is fruit driven with fresh plum, bing cherry, spicy peppercorn and cranberry. The mouthfeel is supple, yet well-structured with gobs of dense ripe Dry Creek Zin fruit, and hints of dark chocolate, fresh strawberries, with a long rhubarb pie finish. Enjoy this poizin with caution, for it is The Wine to Die for!
